Introduction
When a dog has an injured knee they put less weight through that leg due to pain, this leads to more muscle loss resulting in worsening of function and pain.
CCL injuries can vary greatly. Make sure your dog has sufficient pain relief when doing these exercises. Always check with your vet and discontinue any exercises if they are uncomfortable for your dog.
We can’t fix the ligament but we can strengthen the muscles around the injured ligament to help support the joint and decrease pain.
When there is pain in the knee from the injury the surrounding muscles switch off and get weak, plus theyre not used as much so there is even more muscle wastage, plus because of the injury the body is compensating so that other muscles and joints are affected too. The hip and hock (ankle) can get stiff and range of motion exercises help.
